Security forces arrested a student for administrating a fake Facebook page purporting to be the official page of the police, according to a Tuesday press release by the Ministry of Interior.
The detained student, Ahmed A. A. from Zaitoun Cairo, along with others, ran the page and published false news about the ministry, according to the press release.
The arrest comes as a continuation of security campaigns targeting Muslim Brotherhood members who allegedly use social media to incite violence against policemen and publish their personal information.
The suspect was surveilled by the General Administration for Combating Internet Crimes, who attempted to arrest him at his home and other places he frequents, but was unable to find him, according to a security source.
After searching his home police discovered two internet cables for other people, one of which is a student called Abdel Rahman S.A.
Ahmed was finally arrested after police checked his computer, on which they found anti-police and pro-Brotherhood slogans, as well as the names and addresses of policemen.
Investigations indicated that the suspect was the administrator of another fake page entitled Egyptian police. There are many fake social media accounts that publish wrong information while assuming the identity of official authorities by using similar names.
