Cairo asks Britain to freeze Egyptian officials’ assets

The new Egyptian cabinet asked Britain Monday to freeze the assets of Egyptian officials, according to state TV.

“We are in contact with the Egyptian authorities. We will take appropriate measures if this issue comes up, when necessary,” said Maja Kocijancic, spokeswoman for the European Union’s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, Egypt’s MENA news agency said.

However, the EU has not received any Egyptian request to freeze the assets of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his family, the agency reported.

After the resignation of Mubarak on Friday, Switzerland reportedly froze the assets belonging to the former president and his family.
