Tight security across Cairo ahead of Brotherhood demonstrations

Cairo’s Tahrir and Rabaa al-Adaweya squares were tightly secured on Friday morning ahead of protests which the National Coalition for Supporting Legitimacy has called for.

The coalition, which supports former President Mohamed Mursi, has urged its supporters to take part in new week-long demonstrations under the title “Rabaa: Icon of the Revolution”.

These demonstrations come six months after security forces cleared out two Muslim Brotherhood sit-ins by force in Cairo’s Rabaa Square and Giza’s Nahda Square last August.

Hundreds of demonstrators and dozens of policemen were killed the violent confrontations that followed the clearing of the camps.

Military vehicles and security forces were deployed at the Egyptian Museum’s main gate and also at Simon Bolivar Square.

Pro-Mursi demonstrations have been staging protests since the former president was deposed last July to express their rejection for what they called the coup against legitimacy.
